MWT - Guardrails
Having spent my entire life (well, so far) in the east, I have taken for granted the guardrails on the side of all roads that I travel. If there is the remotest dip on the side, DPW or DoT makes sure that there are guardrails to keep me from leaving the traveled thoroughfare.
As we drove through Arkansas, I started to note that guardrails were the exception rather than the rule. And now driving in California up the sides of a cliff (with 20 to 150 foot drops, straight down) the guardrails don’t seem to exist at all. Now, I’m a confident driver, and feel relatively safe as I motor along. But driving alongside a cliff with minimal margin of error, I feel myself tensing. Considering the consequences of a slight deviation from course, I reduce my speed, consistently check the side mirrors and work diligently on anticipating the next hairpin curve.
It got me to thinking about the guardrails in my life. My wife has referred to them as hedges, but where hedges will reduce my ability to see what’s happening outside my pathway, they won’t really prevent me from wandering. There are areas and paths that we aren’t supposed to travel. We need guardrails to keep us from going where we shouldn’t be. Sometimes the guardrails are solid, sometimes they are squishy. Sometimes they are things that we read, sometimes they are people that know us. Do you need a guardrail? Look/ask for prayer partners or simply get into the Word.
