MWT - Fear of Heights
I recently posted about guardrails. Well, the biggest problem for me (other than falling off the cliff) is my fear of heights. I’m the guy that has locked up climbing a step ladder. I once spent half an hour on the roof trying to figure out how to get my leg over the edge and onto the extension ladder. Imagine my fear on a windy road with a 100 foot cliff just outside the car door.
There are 3 things I could do about this situation. 1) Cancel the trip. After years of planning and high expectations that doesn’t sound like a reasonable option. 2) Pray. Not a bad option, it should at least help reduce my anxiety. 3) Take proactive actions to decrease the odds of error.
This is one case where I genuinely believe that prayer is not a stand-alone option. Sometimes in our lives we pray and move on. In fact, I’ve heard many pastors recommend “pray and forget about it”. Prayer in this case is an initial option, not a final option. In so many cases we need to respond to God’s answers (or anticipated answers) to our prayers and take action. We don’t act independently of His response, but in a cooperative manner. Moses didn’t pray and go into his tent, he challenged the Pharaoh. Noah didn’t pray and take a nap, he built an ark. John the Baptist went into the field. Jesus collected disciples. The stories are numerous.
In my case, I dropped the speed by 10% and paid attention to the yellow warning signs. It was still tense, but I completed the venture, and look forward to the next. Are you taking action in accordance with God’s will?
